Cups on the line in shortened Heartland season
The Bruce Steel Cup and PGG Wrightson Cup will be on the line when the Horowhenua Kapiti Heartland team take the field in 2020, with their campaign finalised today.
Due to the Covid-19 Level 2 restrictions, Sam’s Day on September 5th has been postponed to September 19th where Horowhenua Kapiti take on Wairarapa Bush for the PGG Wrightson Cup at Otaki Domain. Horowhenua Kapiti then play Central Hawkes Bay at Playford Park in Levin on September 26th.
Following these two games, Horowhenua Kapiti turn their attention to the Bruce Steel Cup. ‘Brucie’ will be contested for by Horowhenua Kapiti, Wanganui and Wairarapa Bush, with a round robin between the three teams set to decide the Cup holders. On October 3rd, Horowhenua Kapiti host Wanganui at the Shannon Domain in the first game. The second game of the three-game competition on October 10th sees Horowhenua Kapiti travelling over to Masterton to play current Bruce Steel Cup holders, Wairarapa Bush.
Horowhenua Kapiti Rugby Football Union Chief Executive Officer Corey Kennett said he was delighted for our rugby community that they would get a chance to see our Heartland team in action this year, as well as something for our players to work towards.
“I know our players and team management are excited to play for the ‘Pig’ and ‘Brucie’. Both are cups with a lot of history between our closest Heartland neighbours and these games give our community a chance to show their support.”
The PGG Wrightson Cup and Bruce Steel Cup games carry first class status, and teams will be fully comprised by local players. All four Horowhenua Kapiti games kick-off at 2:30pm.
