Wellington and Poverty Bay Winners
The Hurricanes Under 16 Tournament has come to an end today after four successful days in the Capital for the 10 teams competing.
The Division A Don Broughton Shield was won by Wellington after successfully defending their title. After games against Taranaki, Manawatu and Hawke’s Bay, the hosts managed to only leak nine points through their strong defensive system.
Poverty Bay claimed the Saracens Cup for the Division B competition. In a close final, Poverty Bay won 17-12 over Wellington Development to claim the Cup. The 2013 tournament will be a little closer to home for them to defend their title next year too, with East Coast hosting the next edition of the tournament.
The Convener of Age Grade Selectors for the Hurricanes Region, David King said, “Our role there was to view and identify talent across the Hurricanes region to go to a one day camp in December run by New Zealand Rugby for the Hurricanes region.”
“The quality of players at this year’s tournament was of an extremely high level which is very exciting for the future of the Hurricanes region. To have such a strong pool of depth, from both the under 18 camp in July and this tournament at under 16 level, bodes well for the next generation of players coming through the development systems within the Hurricanes region.”
There was a tournament team selected to further congratulate 22 players on their outstanding efforts this week.
